And I’m thinking about the gratitude exercise – when I open up and reveal what matters to me and who/what I feel grateful for, I feel vulnerable because there’s a risk that the other person will ridicule me, reject me, or reveal that information to other people.

And a comment about my version of the “New Choice” game. When Person A states a new, more useful version of an old belief, Person B notices Person’s A’s posture, tone of voice, volume, facial expression, breathing, emotional state… does it sound/feel like Person A truly believes the new belief? Person B also notices how the statement lands in his/her own body.
And here’s another way I use the “New Choice” improv game: When I catch myself thinking an unloving, critical, unhelpful thought about myself, I say to myself out loud “New choice!”, and I say a new, more useful belief. And I might “New choice” it several times to come up with words that really grab me in the gut. For example, when I think “Not good enough”, the logical opposite of that is “I AM good enough”, but for me that doesn’t quite land. So I tweak it: “I know that I’m good enough” or “I trust that I’m good enough.” And I’ve found that the statement that really works for me is: “I know in my bones that I’m good enough.” When I say that, I feel every cell in my body tingling.
And sorry I didn’t see you at the Singapore Improv Festival, Lisa – my team, People’s Liberation Improv, performed there, but I wasn’t able to attend.

Brought me back in touch with an “Aha!” moment I had a while back, which was: If you are someone who desires to do meaningful work in the world that is really, truly, uniquely your own (yes, I do)… and if you are one who subscribes to the idea that all you ever really have to offer that is really, truly, uniquely your own is your self (yes, I do)… then to that end, the most productive thing you can do is get to know yourself more deeply. Thank you for that reminder. <3

These are huge questions you’re stepping into and I don’t think they have easy answers–but (or, AND) the exploration will almost certainly prove fruitful.

I’d recommend Carol Dweck’s growth mindset work as a start. Praising intelligence or native ability is actually debilitating. Praising (i.e., reinforcing) effort, struggle, and resilience (i.e., process) proves supportive. You can see my Mindset 101 post (http://tedwordsblog.com/2012/10/17/mindset-101) and then read Dweck’s Mindset book as a start.

I’d be happy to talk more, too.

Thanks for your reflections,

Ted

I was very interested in your reflections on Alfie Kohn and reinforcement and praise, as I am a Montessori teacher (who was steeped in Alfie Kohn’s approach to engendering intrinsic motivation rather than creating extrinsic dependence in students) and am now studying ABA, and am having some cognitive dissonance. I encounter children who need ABA in order to function optimally in the environment, but this is such a tricky business, and I am interested in any further musings you may have on the meeting of these two areas of thought.

I have often been the lone introvert in such groups and it can be a fierce uphill battle to convince the more extroverted learners that what they perceive to be a “complete waste of time” are the important 9 points you have listed. Susan Cain’s book makes the point that our western culture tends to value extroverted practice over introverted, often to our detriment. Nice piece Ted!

The idea of going session to session is always exhausting! The time spent “in the halls” is often scoffed at – but it is the best “session” you can attend.

I’m glad to hear you might join the fun in Austin.

The official deadline for proposals was just this past Sunday, but the link for submitting still looks open, as of June 5th at 11:30 AM. Try this: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1TiiVMtZOvkTWuDrlsSAggoN5KLfk6bdQM83zMkruQh4/viewform?usp=send_form

Alternatively, you could contact Andy Crouch, the conference coordinator. If you send me an e-mail directly, I can connect you to him.

I sense that at least part of the answer lies in helping them develop that growth mindset, first, and then giving them more skills to translate their learning experience on their own terms. It’s like an inoculation to the debilitating aspects of criticism. Corrective information coming in? OK, activate translators and listen for possibilities for playful improvement. And so on….

Every success starts with one step — some forward, some sideways, some backward but always in motion. How do we help keep students believing in themselves when they perceive that others don’t believe in them — whether the case is true or not? Positively affecting self-perceptions in that mindset is of interest to me as an educator.

I so wish I was at your last retreat and hope that we can play together in the near future. I made the happy discovery this morning (as I mentioned to you on facebook) that Osho expounds on the 110th tantric technique “Gracious one, play. The universe is an empty shell wherein your mind frolics infintely.” -You will LOVE this…check it out here: http://www.meditationiseasy.com/mCorner/techniques/Vigyan_bhairav_tantra/110.php

I run a two day workshop in Belgium (next one in two weekd) called “Living Impro” with my friend Ingrid who works as a Gestalt Therapist. For years we had been saying that our backgrounds have so many similarities and developing this workshop and running it only made that idea stronger. We mix improv exersises with meditation and awareness activities in order to achieve a stronger feeling of connection (inside and outside), a higher level of perception, and a bigger trust in interacting with anything that comes to us. Thanks for your words. It’s truth: words are just words, though we do need them to develop shared ideas. Most of our writings are in Dutch, some in English – maybe not the most related-to-this ones, anyway: http://improvisatietheater.wordpress.com/category/english/
Do you know Zenprov from Marshall C Stern and Nancy Howland Walker? If not, join their fb-group https://www.facebook.com/groups/zenprov/ – I met them few weeks ago and their workshop, even if just a short one, was very inspiring to me.
I love how you describe how to embrace contradictions. This is a wise way of talking about “breaking the rules”.
